Presentation of the Dr Maresch-Klingelhöffer Research Prize 2025 – An evening for the future of paediatric oncology
The Frankfurt Foundation for Children with Cancer awarded this year’s Dr Maresch-Klingelhöffer Research Prize – an award for outstanding young scientists whose work brings hope and progress to paediatric oncology.
On 6 November 2025, around 70 guests gathered to celebrate an evening of science, humanity and vision. This year’s award winner, Dr Romain Sigaud from Jena University Hospital, embodies everything this award stands for: deep conviction, scientific excellence and an unwavering determination to improve the lives of children with cancer.
„Because every child deserves the chance to grow, dream and live the childhood they deserve.“ – Dr. Romain Sigaud
Dr Sigaud conducts research into low-grade gliomas – a common but difficult-to-treat type of brain tumour in children. His work shows how molecular processes influence tumour behaviour and how new therapeutic approaches could help to avoid stressful treatments. This is an important step towards more individualised and gentler therapies.
The award ceremony was more than just a tribute – it was a plea for joint commitment. In moving speeches, our speakers covered topics ranging from clinical practice to social responsibility. All of them are passionate about their commitment to research and the future of children with cancer:
- Jürgen Vogt, Chairman of the Foundation, opened with a very personal welcome speech on the importance of promoting young talent in science, which the Foundation aims to recognise and encourage with this award.
- Sonja Peichl, Managing Director of the ODDO BHF Foundation, drew a parallel between commitment to paediatric oncology research for the future of our children and philanthropy as a necessary pillar of society.
- Christian Braun, newly appointed professor of Translational Paediatric Oncology at Goethe University, shared insights from his clinical work that motivate him every day to achieve progress in therapy.
- Dirk Heckl, endowed professor and head of the Institute for Experimental Paediatric Haematology and Oncology (EPHO) at Goethe University, gave a moving laudatory speech that highlighted the strength and significance of Dr. Sigaud’s research.
Dr Sigaud’s research work is making a difference – it gives hope to children with cancer and their families. We congratulate this year’s award winner!
